Is your DM tool skipping Instagram story replies?
Story replies and voice notes arrive with no text, so many DM tools skip them. Here's how to check your tool and stop missing customer DMs on Instagram.

Story replies and voice notes go missing in DM tools because they reach the tool with no typed text, and a tool built around text messages can skip them without a warning. BetterSocials changed that for Instagram: as of October 27, 2026, story replies, story mentions, voice messages, photos and shared reels land in its Inbox as DMs with a plain label such as "Replied to your story".
What happens to a story reply in a DM tool
BetterSocials is the release we're logging here, and the angle is the rules: the limits, windows and counts that decide whether a customer's message reaches you in time. A DM tool is any app that pulls your Instagram or Facebook messages out of the phone app and into a shared inbox. Most of them were built for typed messages.
A story reply doesn't look like a typed message. Someone taps your story, records a voice note or sends a heart, and the tool receives a message with nothing in its text field. If the tool files messages by their words, that message has nothing to file.
The result is quiet. The customer sees their message as sent. You see nothing in the tool, and the only copy sits in the Instagram app you stopped checking.
Why do messages with no text get dropped?
BetterSocials's own fix shows where the gap sits. Its Inbox now writes a plain line in place of the missing text, such as "Replied to your story" or "Sent a voice message", so the message has something to show and a thread to sit in.
Without that line, a text-less DM has two problems inside a tool built for text:
- The message has no words to display, so the tool has nothing to put on screen.
- Nothing in the tool tells you a message was skipped, so the gap stays invisible.
That second point is why these misses go unnoticed. A missing comment is easy to spot on the post. A missing DM only shows up when a customer asks why you never answered.
Which kinds of DMs go missing most often?
BetterSocials lists five kinds of Instagram DMs that used to go missing and now land in its Inbox. Each one tends to mean something different for a business:
- Story replies, where someone answers a story you posted. These are often the warmest messages you get, like a question about a slot or a price shown in the story.
- Story mentions, where someone tags your account in their own story. These are free word of mouth and a chance to thank a customer in public.
- Voice messages, where someone talks instead of typing. A voice note can carry a full booking request in a few seconds.
- Photos, where someone sends a picture with no caption. A photo of a product, a hairstyle or a room is often the whole question.
- Shared reels or posts, where someone forwards a post to you. A shared post with no text can mean "do you have this" or "can you do this for me".
Every one of the five can arrive with no typed words at all. That's the shared trait, and it's the reason a text-first tool loses them together.
How can I tell if my DM tool is missing messages?
Instagram itself is the control for this test, because the app shows every message the account received. You can run the check in about two minutes with a second account you control.
The two-minute test
- From a second Instagram account, reply to one of your business account's stories with a heart or a single emoji.
- From the same account, send your business account a short voice note.
- Share one of your own reels to your business account with no text.
- Open your DM tool and look for all three. Then open the Instagram app and compare.
If the Instagram app shows three new messages and the tool shows fewer, the tool is dropping text-less DMs. Repeat the test after the vendor ships an update, because inbox behavior changes with releases.
Why does a missed story reply cost more on Instagram?
Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM through an app within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the conversation is closed to every tool until the person writes again, and every new message from them restarts the clock.
The window is the reason a dropped story reply hurts. If you find it on day two, no DM tool can send your answer. You can still reply from the Instagram app itself, which has no window, but the customer has waited a day and may have booked elsewhere.
Three more rules sit beside the window, per Meta's developer docs and Instagram's help center as of July 2026:
- A DM from someone who doesn't follow you goes to your message requests folder, and a filtered request moves to a hidden folder with no notification. Instagram's page on who you can send messages to covers who can reach whom.
- Requests with no activity for 30 days stop being returned to apps at all.
- A private reply to a comment is limited to one per comment, within 7 days of the comment being posted.
TikTok runs a tighter version. Apps can answer TikTok DMs only as replies, at most 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message, and only for accounts outside the UK and Europe.
How do I make sure I never miss a DM from a potential customer?
BetterSocials, Manychat, Buffer and Hootsuite each answer a different part of this question. The steps below work with any of them, and they start in Instagram itself.
- Turn on DM and message request notifications in Instagram, and check that your phone settings let them through.
- Open the requests folder every day, because new customers who don't follow you land there.
- Run the two-minute test on whatever inbox you use, so you know it shows story replies and voice notes.
- Tag leads as they arrive and get an alert on your phone, so a booking question doesn't wait behind compliments.
- Answer inside 24 hours, while every tool can still send.
On the tools: Buffer's inbox covers comments on your posts but not DMs, as of October 2026, so Instagram and Facebook messages stay in the phone app. Hootsuite includes its inbox from Standard at $99 per user a month, billed annually, as of October 2026. Manychat works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, and its Pro plan is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, then $0.05 per extra contact, billed monthly, as of October 2026. So a Manychat Pro bill rises with every contact past the 2,500 included, and a busy month costs more than a quiet one.
How BetterSocials does this
BetterSocials puts Instagram and Facebook comments and DMs in one Inbox, along with TikTok comments and DMs and comments from YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages. Text-less Instagram DMs now land there as DMs with a plain label, in the same Inbox as every other message.
Story replies and voice notes get no AI reply in BetterSocials. You answer them yourself, or press AI assist on the thread for a draft in your voice. Typed DMs can get AI replies, set under Settings, then AI voice, and after five AI replies in one conversation in a day the rest wait for you.
Every new comment and DM gets a tag when it arrives. A Lead tag goes on messages asking about price, booking or availability, and a new lead sends a push notification to your phone, with at most one reminder email a day for unanswered leads.
The plans, as of October 27, 2026:
- Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four social accounts and one login.
- Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six social accounts and one login.
- Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve social accounts and unlimited teammates.
Every plan has a 7-day free trial with a card required, unlimited contacts and nothing billed per contact. The trial and plans sit on the BetterSocials pricing page, and the setup guide on its help center walks through connecting an account.
FAQ
Why didn't a story reply show up in my DM tool?
Most likely the story reply arrived with no typed text and your tool skipped it. Many DM tools file messages by their text, so a reply with no words has nothing to store. Open the Instagram app to find it, then run the two-minute test to see whether your tool labels text-less DMs.
Do voice notes show up in social media inbox tools?
Some do and some don't, and a tool's own pages rarely say. Send a voice note to your business account from a second account and look for it in the tool. In BetterSocials it lands in the Inbox as a DM that says "Sent a voice message".
Can I still reply to a story reply after 24 hours?
Not from a third-party tool. Instagram only lets apps send a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message, and every new message restarts the clock. You can still answer from the Instagram app itself, which has no window.
Why do DMs from new customers end up in message requests?
Instagram sends a DM from someone who doesn't follow you to your message requests folder. A filtered request moves to a hidden folder with no notification. Check requests every day, and reply in public when a new customer comments so they know to look for your answer.
Does BetterSocials write AI replies to story replies and voice notes?
No. Story replies and voice notes land in the BetterSocials Inbox with a plain label, and they get no AI reply. You answer them yourself, or use AI assist on the thread for a draft in your voice.
How do I get alerted when a potential customer DMs me?
Turn on DM and message request notifications in Instagram and in your phone settings. In BetterSocials, every new DM asking about price, booking or availability gets a Lead tag and sends a push notification to your phone. Unanswered leads get at most one reminder email a day.
