Meta's free auto-replies in 2026: the rules and limits

Meta Business Suite's free auto-replies send keyword DMs and template replies on Instagram and Facebook. The limits, windows and counts, logged for 2026.

By The Shipping Log staff8 min read

Meta Business Suite's free automations can send a DM when someone comments a keyword on your Instagram or Facebook post, and they can answer new messages with instant replies, away messages and FAQ templates. Each reply is a fixed template you write, and coverage stops at Meta's own apps. Meta Business Suite is the free pick for keyword DMs on those two platforms. BetterSocials is best for answering the questions your templates miss, in your voice, from $29 a month for four accounts. ManyChat fits teams that want multi-step flows.

What Meta's free automations cover

Meta Business Suite is free. In Meta's words, it "is free to use on desktop and in the Meta Business Suite mobile app," and its inbox lets you "read and reply to new messages and comments from your Facebook Page, Messenger, Instagram account and WhatsApp Business account in one inbox," per Meta's Business Suite help page.

We took the rules angle for this entry: the counts, the windows and the limits, each one sourced to Meta's help center or developer docs. On desktop, open Inbox, then Automations, and you get a menu of ready-made templates.

That menu holds five kinds of automation:

  • Comment to message sends your template as a DM when a comment on your post contains keywords or phrases you set.
  • Keyword replies answer incoming DMs that contain the words you pick, and the reply can include "photos, videos, buttons, links and other personalizations."
  • Instant replies greet first-time messages, and away messages cover the hours you're closed.
  • FAQ templates answer questions about your hours, location and contact details.
  • Custom automations pair a trigger (a new message, a label added, a conversation assigned) with an action (send a message, add a label, mark the thread).

Setting up an automatic reply to Instagram comments

Meta Business Suite runs comment-to-DM for free, and setup happens on desktop. Your Instagram account has to be connected as a business asset first. Meta says "you will only see comments from connected business assets."

The steps

  1. Open Meta Business Suite on a computer and go to Inbox, then Automations.
  2. Pick the Comment to message template.
  3. Enter the keywords or phrases that should trigger it, spelled the way people will type them.
  4. Write the message the commenter receives. It is the same fixed text for everyone.
  5. Turn it on and test it with one comment from a second account.

Meta's help pages describe the DM and stop there. They don't say whether the automation also leaves a public reply under the comment, or whether it covers comments on ads. Test both on your own page before a launch depends on them.

Every tool on Meta's API follows the same private-reply rule. Meta's private replies documentation says "only one message can be sent to the Instagram user who commented," and "the message must be sent within 7 days from when the comment was created." A commenter who doesn't follow you gets that message in their Requests folder instead of their main inbox.

The limits on Meta's auto-replies, by the numbers

Meta Business Suite's keyword automations send templates you write, and they wait up to 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first. A buyer can scroll away in less time.

The table lists each limit from Meta's help center and developer docs, as of October 2026.

RuleLimitApplies to
KeywordsUp to 5 per automationKeyword automations
MatchingCase-sensitiveKeyword automations
Send delayUp to 15 minutesKeyword automations
DM reply window24 hours after their last messageInstagram DMs from any app
Private replyOne per comment, within 7 daysComment-to-DM on Instagram
FAQ questionsUp to 4Instagram DMs
Quick reply buttons13, up to 20 characters eachInstagram API, mobile only

Case-sensitive matching means a reply only sends when the word matches exactly. A person who asks "how much?" in their own words never triggers a template keyed to "PRICE."

The 24-hour window closes the conversation for every tool once a day passes since the person's last message. You can still answer by hand in the Instagram app, which has no window.

Region matters too. Meta says "certain messaging-related metrics, ad campaigns and organic messaging features for businesses and ads delivered to and from Europe and Japan will be unavailable." WhatsApp in Business Suite is unavailable in the UK, the EU and the European Economic Area, Australia, Japan and several other countries.

Coverage is Meta-only. Business Suite holds Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp messages plus comments on your Facebook and Instagram posts. YouTube, LinkedIn, Threads and email aren't covered.

Meta Business Agent and Instagram's AI auto replies

Meta Business Agent is Meta's business-side AI for answering messages, and turning it on pauses your existing automations instead of building on them. You choose between your templates and the agent.

Instagram's AI auto replies are a separate creator feature. Instagram's help center says it "is being gradually introduced and may not be available to you yet," and that "you must have already built a creator AI for Instagram with Meta AI Studio." It runs in the mobile app only.

Meta also warns that "messages generated by AI may not be accurate or appropriate." Instagram's creator AI answers from a knowledge base you assemble.

Picking a comment management tool for a small business

BetterSocials, Meta Business Suite, ManyChat and Buffer split the job differently. The difference is what happens to the comments and DMs your keywords don't catch.

Prices below are monthly unless marked, as of October 2026.

ToolPlatformsDMsAI repliesPrice
BetterSocialsSix, including YouTube and TikTokInstagram, Facebook, TikTokIn your voice, from your rules$29, four accounts
Meta Business SuiteFacebook, Instagram, WhatsAppTemplates you writeBusiness Agent, pauses automationsFree
ManyChatInstagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTokKeyword and flow-builder DMsAI Comments, Instagram beta$39, 2,500 contacts
BufferPosting across platformsComments only, no DMsNot listed$30 for six channels, yearly

Pick Meta Business Suite if you only post on Instagram and Facebook and a few keyword templates cover what people ask. It costs nothing, and the 15-minute wait is the price of free.

Pick ManyChat if you need multi-step flows or WhatsApp, Telegram and SMS. ManyChat Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, billed monthly, and each extra contact costs $0.05. So a Pro account that reaches 4,000 people in a month pays the $39 plus $0.05 for each of the 1,500 contacts over the limit. ManyChat has no YouTube support.

Pick Buffer if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand. Buffer is cheaper at six channels, where Buffer Essentials is $30 a month on annual billing against $39 a month billed yearly for six accounts on BetterSocials Pro. What the difference buys is the DM side of the inbox, AI replies and keyword comment-to-DM.

Teams with several people answering have other options. As of October 2026, Hootsuite includes its inbox from Standard at $99 per user a month, and Sprout Social puts its inbox on Standard at $199 per seat a month, both billed annually. Agorapulse gives 1 automated moderation rule per social profile on its lower plans and unlimited rules on its top plan.

Which AI tool fits a small business's social media

BetterSocials and tools like it start from answering people, while Buffer, Later and SocialBee start from writing and scheduling posts and add an inbox on some plans. Most small businesses need both jobs done, so check which half a tool covers before you pay.

For writing posts, SocialBee Bootstrap is $29 a month as of October 2026, with a lower price billed annually, for five profiles with unlimited AI content generation. Later's Conversations inbox starts on its Growth plan at $37.50 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026, and it has no YouTube or LinkedIn conversations.

For answering people, the AI options sit at different depths. InstantDM runs AI agents powered by ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini on Instagram and Facebook, with $9.99 and $24.99 plans as of September 2026. Agorapulse lists AI reply suggestions in its inbox. For the full price spread, see Comment-to-DM tools in 2026, sorted by price band as your contacts grow.

Where BetterSocials fills the gaps

BetterSocials keeps keyword comment-to-DM and adds AI replies for everything else. On Instagram and Facebook, a keyword comment sends a DM with your link. On TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages, the keyword posts a public reply with the link instead.

AI replies live in Settings, then AI voice, with separate Comments and DMs sections. Each has three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. On Draft for me, every new comment or DM gets a draft in your voice, and nothing posts until you approve it.

On Reply in my voice, BetterSocials answers everyday comments 1 to 5 minutes later, and a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, which only switches on once you've written at least one AI rule with your prices, hours or booking link. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, the AI doesn't guess.

Instagram's 24-hour window applies here as well. Past it, BetterSocials can't send a DM, and you answer in the Instagram app.

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates. Every plan has a 7-day free trial with a card, unlimited contacts and unlimited keyword automations. For the keyword setup itself, see How to set up "comment LINK and I'll DM you" on Instagram in 2026.

FAQ

Is Meta Business Suite free to use for auto-replies?

Yes. Meta says "Meta Business Suite is free to use on desktop and in the Meta Business Suite mobile app." Comment to message, instant replies and away messages cost nothing, and each message is a template you write.

Can Meta Business Suite automatically reply to Instagram comments?

Yes, with a DM. The Comment to message automation sends your template when a comment on your Facebook or Instagram post contains keywords you set. Meta's help pages don't say whether it also posts a public reply, so test it on one post first.

How many keywords can a Meta Business Suite automation use?

Up to 5 keywords or phrases per automation, and matching is case-sensitive. Keyword automations wait up to 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first. If people ask in their own words, the template doesn't fire.

Does Meta Business Suite cover YouTube, TikTok or LinkedIn comments?

No. Meta Business Suite holds Facebook Page, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp messages, plus comments on your Facebook and Instagram posts. BetterSocials puts YouTube, TikTok, Threads and LinkedIn Company Page comments in the same inbox, from $29 a month for four accounts, or $24 a month billed yearly.

Can Meta Business Suite write replies in my own voice with AI?

Not in its keyword automations, which send the fixed template you wrote. Meta Business Agent can answer messages, but turning it on pauses your existing automations. Instagram's AI auto replies are mobile only and still rolling out.

Why can't my tool send an Instagram DM after a day?

Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM through any app within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the conversation is closed until they write again. You can still answer by hand in the Instagram app.

Do I still need ManyChat if Meta's comment to message is free?

Not for basic keyword comment-to-DM on Instagram and Facebook. ManyChat Pro is $39 a month for 2,500 active contacts, billed monthly, and it earns that with multi-step flows and channels like WhatsApp, Telegram and SMS. ManyChat has no YouTube support, so YouTube comments need a different tool either way.
