"Comment LINK and I'll DM you": Instagram's 2026 rules
Comment LINK and I'll DM you is comment-to-DM automation on Meta's API. The Instagram rules it runs inside, and the tools that send the link in 2026.

"Comment LINK and I'll DM you" is comment-to-DM automation. A tool connected to Instagram through Meta's official API spots the keyword in a comment, posts a public reply and sends the commenter a private DM with the link.
For the link plus replies to every other comment and DM, BetterSocials is our pick, from $29 a month for four accounts. Manychat fits multi-step funnels, and Meta Business Suite runs a basic version for free.
The rules behind comment LINK, logged for 2026
Instagram's comment-to-DM setup has four moving parts, and every tool on Meta's API runs inside the same rules. We took the rules explainer for this piece, because the limits change more often than the tools do, and each change lands on your funnel the day it ships.
Comment-to-DM means a keyword in a comment triggers a private message to the person who wrote it. The chain runs in four steps:
- A viewer comments your keyword, such as LINK or GUIDE, on a post or Reel.
- The tool reads the comment through Meta's API and matches the word.
- The tool posts a public reply under the comment and sends one private reply as a DM, carrying your link.
- The viewer opens the DM and clicks, which is the one step you can measure for certain.
Instagram decides what happens between steps 3 and 4. A DM to someone who doesn't follow you usually lands in message requests, filters can hide it, and throttles can queue it. That holds for every tool, so the public reply telling people to check their DMs does real work.
Four tools that send the link, priced as of October 2026
BetterSocials, Manychat and Meta Business Suite all send a DM from a keyword comment on Instagram, and Blotato's agent tools send DMs and private replies to comments. They differ in what they charge as your audience grows and in what happens to the comments that aren't keywords.
The table uses each vendor's listed monthly price as of October 2026, and Meta Business Suite's terms come from Meta's help center.
| Tool | Monthly price | Contacts | Platforms | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | $29 for 4 accounts | Unlimited | Six, keyword DMs on Instagram and Facebook | Keyword links plus replies in your voice |
| Manychat | $39 on Pro | 2,500, then $0.05 each | Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok | Multi-step funnels and WhatsApp |
| Meta Business Suite | $0 | Not listed | Instagram and Facebook comments | One fixed template, set on desktop |
| Blotato | $29 on Starter | Not listed | Nine for posting | Posting and replies through an AI agent |
BetterSocials is the pick when the keyword DM is one part of a busy inbox. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts, and Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates.
Every BetterSocials plan includes unlimited contacts and unlimited keyword automations. The AI drafts replies to the rest of your comments and DMs in your voice, and you approve them or let them send.
Manychat is the pick for multi-step sequences and for WhatsApp. Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, billed monthly, so it starts a little above BetterSocials Creator before the contact meter runs.
Meta Business Suite is the cheapest, at no charge, and it's enough for one keyword and one fixed message. Blotato is built for posting from an AI agent, with Starter at $29 a month, Creator at $97 and Agency at $499, all billed monthly. Its MCP tools include DM automations, a private reply to a comment, and comment replies on Instagram or Facebook posts.
InstantDM sells the keyword trigger too. Its pricing page, read October 28, 2026, lists a follow-before-link gate, a reply delay and DM sequences of up to 10 messages beyond its Free plan.
Sending the link when someone comments a keyword
BetterSocials sets up a keyword on one screen with five fields and no flow builder. The steps below follow BetterSocials's own setup guide, read October 25, 2026.
- Connect the Instagram account under Connected Accounts. You sign in on Instagram's own screen, and it takes under a minute.
- Open Comment to DM and pick New keyword link.
- Choose the accounts the keyword runs on, then type the word, such as LINK. Capitals don't matter.
- Write the public reply that goes under the comment, then the DM and the link it carries.
- Leave AI replies off to start, or switch them on so each reply is written fresh in your tone. Then hit Go live.
On Instagram and Facebook, the commenter gets both halves: the public reply and the DM. On YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn Company Pages, the message posts as a public reply with the link, because a comment there can't fire a private DM.
Manychat documents the same trigger in its help center as Quick Automation: Auto-DM links from comments. The difference between the two setups is the builder: Manychat's flows run multi-step sequences past the first link, and BetterSocials keeps the keyword to the reply and the DM, with AI replies answering what the person writes back.
Meta's limits on private replies, with dates
Meta caps private replies to comments on posts and Reels at 750 calls per hour per Instagram professional account, per its Graph API rate-limit docs as checked in July 2026. Each comment gets one private reply, and it has to go out within 7 days of the comment.
The ceiling you feel sits lower. BetterSocials's write-up on comment-to-DM delivery puts tool pacing at roughly 200 automated DMs an hour per account, with one automated DM per person per 24 hours. So a Reel that collects 3,000 keyword comments takes about 15 hours to clear, and anything still queued after 7 days is gone.
Three more dated rules sit around the DM:
- Meta deprecated message tags in April 2026. Tools used them to message people outside the 24-hour window.
- Instagram lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the conversation stays closed until they write again.
- A June 2026 thread on r/Manychat reported fewer than half of comment-triggered DMs reaching commenters. The delivery write-up traces that to Instagram routing non-followers into message requests.
Count clicks per DM sent, per post, with a UTM-tagged link. A sent counter tells you Meta accepted the call, and a click tells you the person got it.
Meta Business Suite's free keyword automation and where it stops
Meta Business Suite includes a comment-to-message automation at no charge. In Meta's own words, it sends "a message reply to comments on your posts that contain specific keywords or phrases", and "Keyword automations are only available in Meta Business Suite on desktop."
Meta's keyword automation rules set the rest of the limits:
- Each automation holds "up to 5 specific keywords or phrases", and the same keyword can only sit in one automation.
- Matching is strict: "keywords are case-sensitive, and an automated message will not be sent unless the keywords match exactly."
- Replies can wait: "Inbox will automatically send a keyword automation to a message after 15 minutes unless you personally respond before then."
- Every commenter gets the same template you wrote.
Meta Business Suite is enough when you run one keyword on Instagram or Facebook and one message suits everyone. A paid tool earns its price once you want the reply sent at once, matched without caring about capitals, or written for each person.
Manychat's contact meter, worked through
Manychat bills by active contacts. As of October 2026, Pro is $39 a month, billed monthly, with 2,500 active contacts, and each extra contact costs $0.05 on Pro, $0.10 on Essential and $0.025 on Business.
A Pro account that passes 2,500 people in a month pays $0.05 for each person over the line. A couple of thousand extra contacts push the bill past a hundred dollars a month.
BetterSocials Creator stays at $29 a month for four accounts at either count, and Pro at $49 a month for six accounts, because nothing is billed per contact. Manychat's extra spend buys its flow builder, multi-step sequences and WhatsApp, which matter if your funnel runs past one link.
What BetterSocials ships for keyword DMs as of October 2026
BetterSocials pairs every keyword DM on Instagram and Facebook with a public reply under the comment, so a commenter who doesn't follow the account knows to check message requests. Its sending engine paces inside platform limits, skips duplicate DMs to the same person and stops a runaway automation.
Three changes are worth logging:
- On October 23, 2026, AI replies started answering DMs on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. On the Reply in my voice setting, a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives, and anything your AI rules don't cover waits in Needs reply.
- Link tracking, under Settings, then Link tracking, adds UTM tags to keyword links at send time. It's off by default on every plan, and manual inbox replies are never tagged.
- As of October 27, 2026, every new comment and DM gets a tag when it arrives, such as Lead or Comment to DM. A new lead sends a push notification to the owner's phone.
Every BetterSocials plan has a 7-day free trial with a card required, and a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first paid charge. The plans and the trial sit on BetterSocials's pricing page.
FAQ
Is comment-to-DM automation allowed on Instagram?
Yes. Meta built an approved API so tools can answer comments and DMs for a business, and it publishes rate limits for them. What breaks the rules is a bot that logs in with your password and acts like a person.
Does Instagram have a free comment-to-DM feature?
Yes, through Meta Business Suite, at no charge. Setup is desktop only, each keyword automation holds up to 5 case-sensitive keywords, and a reply can wait 15 minutes unless you answer first. Every commenter gets the same template you wrote.
Why didn't the person get my DM after they commented?
Instagram routing is the usual cause. A non-follower gets the DM in message requests, filters can hide it, and throttles queue it. Post a public reply telling people to check their requests, and count link clicks instead of sends.
How much does Manychat cost for comment-to-DM?
Manychat Pro is $39 a month, billed monthly, with 2,500 active contacts, as of October 2026. Each extra contact costs $0.05 on Pro, so a couple of thousand extra contacts push the bill past a hundred dollars a month.
Can a TikTok or YouTube comment trigger a DM with a link?
No. YouTube has no DM API for any tool, and a TikTok comment can't fire a private DM outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. On both, BetterSocials posts the keyword reply publicly under the comment with the link.
Can I answer a DM after 24 hours on Instagram?
Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, BetterSocials and most other tools can't send, and the conversation stays closed until the person writes again. You can still answer by hand in the Instagram app.
