YouTube comments and Instagram DMs in one inbox (2026)

Connect YouTube and Instagram to one inbox, then let a keyword send your link: a DM on Instagram, a public reply on YouTube. The platform rules, dated.

By The Shipping Log staff6 min read

To manage YouTube comments and Instagram DMs in one inbox, connect both accounts to a tool that reads both, then set your keyword replies there. BetterSocials does this for one person, sending a keyword link as a DM on Instagram and as a public reply on YouTube. Agorapulse and Sprout Social sell combined inboxes too, priced per user for teams.

Two platforms, two rulebooks, one screen

BetterSocials can put both apps in one list, but no tool can change what YouTube or Instagram allow. A unified inbox is one list of every comment and DM from your connected accounts, answered from one screen. The rules underneath it still belong to Google and Meta.

That's why we took the rules angle for this piece. The Shipping Log tracks what changes in the tools you run your work on. Here the thing that decides your setup is each platform's limits, so we logged them with the dates we read them.

You'll get the tools first, then YouTube's rules, then Instagram's, then the setup.

What each tool's inbox covers, as of October 2026

BetterSocials leads this table because the job here is YouTube comments, Instagram DMs and keyword links in one place. Prices are as each vendor listed them in October 2026, except Agorapulse, which we read in July 2026.

ToolPriceInbox scopeBilling
BetterSocials$29 a month, four accountsSix platforms, DMs on threeMonthly, or $24 yearly
Agorapulse$79 per user a monthOne combined inbox, every tierAnnual
Sprout Social$199 per seat a monthInbox from StandardAnnual
Hootsuite$99 per user a monthInbox without YouTube commentsAnnual
Buffer$5 per channel a monthComments only, YouTube includedAnnual

Buffer is cheaper per channel. Four channels on Buffer cost 4 x $5 = $20 a month on annual billing, against $24 a month billed yearly for four accounts on BetterSocials Creator. The difference buys the DM side of the inbox, AI replies and keyword comment-to-DM, since Buffer's inbox covers comments and no DMs.

Metricool also reads YouTube comments, including on its free tier, as of August 2026. Pick Agorapulse or Sprout Social if several people share the inbox and you need a team tool. Pick Hootsuite only if YouTube isn't one of the platforms you answer.

BetterSocials, like every other tool, can only answer a YouTube comment in public. YouTube has no direct message API, so no tool can turn a YouTube comment into a private DM. A keyword auto-reply on YouTube posts your link as a reply under the comment instead.

So yes, you can auto-reply to YouTube comments with a keyword and send a link. Someone comments a word such as GUIDE, and the tool posts a reply carrying your link where everyone can see it.

The same holds on Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn Company Pages, where the keyword answers in the public reply. CommentShark answers YouTube comments with AI trained on your past replies and an approval queue, but it covers YouTube only. ManyChat has no YouTube support, so it can't fill this half of the job.

How a reply gets onto YouTube through the API

BetterSocials uses the official APIs, and on YouTube that means the YouTube Data API. Its reference includes a comments insert method, the documented way to post a comment through the API.

In BetterSocials you sign in on Google's own screen when you connect a channel, so your password never reaches BetterSocials. There's no private message method to call, which is why the keyword link has to stay public on YouTube.

One limit is easy to miss. BetterSocials surfaces comments on old videos for you to answer by hand, while its automation covers recent and active content.

Instagram's keyword DM rules, dated

Meta sets the rules every Instagram tool works inside, including BetterSocials and ManyChat. These are the ones that shape a keyword DM, from Meta's pages as we read them on October 16, 2026.

Private replies

A private reply is the DM a tool sends to someone who commented. Per Meta's private replies documentation, only one message can go to that person, and it must go out within 7 days of the comment. The conversation continues only once they write back.

That same page says the DM lands in the person's inbox if they follow you, and in their message requests folder if they don't.

The 24-hour window

Instagram lets a business reply to a DM through any tool only within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the send is refused until they write again. You can still answer from the Instagram app itself.

Meta's free keyword automation

Meta Business Suite includes a free comment-to-message automation. Per Meta's help page, each automation takes up to 5 keywords, the match is case-sensitive and exact, and Inbox waits 15 minutes before sending unless you respond first. Setup is desktop only, and the message is a fixed template you write.

Setting it up in three steps

BetterSocials takes about ten minutes to set up, by its own help guide. The steps below follow its screens.

1. Connect both accounts

Open Connected Accounts, pick a platform and sign in on that platform's screen. Each account takes under a minute, and every comment and DM from it lands in one Inbox.

Go to Comment to DM and choose New keyword link. You fill in five fields: the accounts, the word to watch for, the public reply, the DM with your link, and a switch for AI replies. Capitals don't matter. Choose Go live and it runs.

3. Approve replies from Needs reply

Questions and drafts wait in Needs reply. You approve them one at a time, or send comment drafts in a batch with Approve in bulk.

How BetterSocials handles both platforms

BetterSocials puts YouTube comments and Instagram comments and DMs in one Inbox, with views for Needs reply and Replied, plus tags, leads and an archive. Every new message gets a tag such as Lead, Spam or Support when it arrives.

AI replies have two sections, Comments and DMs, each with three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. The AI writes in your voice from a profile built on your past replies, plus AI rules you write in plain sentences. When your rules don't cover a question, it waits for you in Needs reply. Each AI reply or draft uses 1 AI credit.

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts, one login and 1,000 AI credits. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates. Every plan has unlimited contacts and keyword automations, and a 7-day free trial with a card required.

FAQ

Can I send a DM to someone who comments on my YouTube video?

No, and no tool can. YouTube has no direct message API, so there's no private inbox to connect. A keyword on YouTube posts a public reply with your link. For a private DM with the link, use Instagram or Facebook.

How does a tool reply to YouTube comments through the API?

Through the YouTube Data API, the official route BetterSocials uses, whose reference includes a comments insert method. The reply is always public, because YouTube has no direct message API.

Is Meta's free comment-to-DM enough for Instagram?

For basic keyword DMs on Instagram and Facebook, yes, and it costs nothing. Meta Business Suite sends a fixed template, allows 5 case-sensitive keywords per automation and can wait 15 minutes before sending. It doesn't cover YouTube comments.

How long do I have to answer an Instagram DM from a tool?

You have 24 hours from the person's last message. After that, Meta refuses the send from every tool until they write again. You can still answer from the Instagram app.

Will the keyword DM reach someone who doesn't follow me?

It arrives, but in a different folder. Meta's private replies documentation says the DM lands in the inbox for followers and in the message requests folder for everyone else.

What does a tool for YouTube comments and Instagram DMs cost?

Agorapulse is $79 per user a month on annual billing, and Sprout Social's inbox is $199 per seat a month, billed annually. BetterSocials Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts. That price includes unlimited contacts and keyword automations.
