For a small business where one or two people answer Instagram and Facebook DMs, respond.io is usually more than you need. respond.io is software sized for a team sharing one inbox. Meta Business Suite is free and best if you stay inside Meta's own apps. BetterSocials is best for an owner who wants AI replies in their own voice, at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login.
Whichever you pick, Instagram's rules set the clock. A business can only reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message, so the tool that matters is the one that gets you answering inside that window.
The Instagram rules every DM tool works inside
Instagram applies the same messaging rules to respond.io, Meta Business Suite and every other tool, so we log the rules first and the prices after. These are the limits that decide what a small business needs, with the source for each.
The 24-hour reply window
Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the conversation is closed until they write again. Most tools, BetterSocials included, can't send a DM past that window, though you can still answer in the Instagram app.
Meta's developer policy also rules out the usual ways around it. In Meta's words, "One-time notifications are not available for IG Messaging API" and "Sponsored messages are not available for IG Messaging API."
The 7-day comment-to-DM limit
Comment-to-DM means a comment on your post sends the commenter a private message. Meta calls this a private reply, and its private replies documentation sets the terms: "Only one message can be sent to the Instagram user who commented. The message must be sent within 7 days from when the comment was created."
The conversation only continues if the person answers, and then the 24-hour window applies. That message lands in the person's main inbox if they follow you, and in their Request folder if they don't.
What that means for your tool
A business answering its own DMs needs three things from a tool. It needs every DM in one place, a fast answer inside 24 hours, and comment-to-DM that fires while the comment is fresh. Team routing and seats for a support floor aren't on that list.
respond.io's entry price, and what a solo owner pays for
respond.io is software sized for several people sharing one inbox, and that team side is what its price pays for. If you answer the DMs yourself, the team side of that bill goes unused.
That's the honest test for respond.io. Count the people who answer your messages, and if it's you and maybe one helper, the team side sits idle.
Two smaller starting points fit a solo owner. Meta Business Suite costs nothing, and BetterSocials Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts with unlimited contacts.
Meta Business Suite's free inbox, in Meta's own words
Meta Business Suite is the free starting point, and Meta's help pages say so directly: "Meta Business Suite is free to use on desktop and in the Meta Business Suite mobile app." Its inbox help page describes the job as "Read and reply to new messages and comments from your Facebook Page, Messenger, Instagram account and WhatsApp Business account in one inbox."
If one person helps you, Meta Business Suite handles that too. "You can assign conversations in Inbox to different people who help manage your business's communication on Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp," as long as they have "Facebook access to the Page, or task access to Messages."
Two limits come with it. You only see messages and comments from connected business assets, never your personal profile. Meta also says that "organic messaging features for businesses and ads delivered to and from Europe and Japan will be unavailable," and WhatsApp in the inbox is unavailable in the UK, the European Union and several other countries.
Where Meta Business Suite's free tools stop
Meta Business Suite's keyword automations send templates you write, or hand the job to Meta Business Agent. You set them up on desktop, and they wait 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first. Turning on Meta Business Agent pauses the automations you already have.
Meta Business Suite also caps how late you can DM a commenter. "You can't send a message in response to comments posted more than 7 days ago," says Meta's comment help page.
The coverage is Meta's own apps: Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and comments on your Facebook and Instagram posts. If your customers also find you on TikTok, those messages stay in a separate app. And a template answers only the questions you predicted, so everything else in the inbox still waits for you.
The 2026 price log for respond.io alternatives
BetterSocials, Meta Business Suite, ManyChat, InstantDM and respond.io are the five options we'd put in front of a small business answering its own DMs. The table is sorted by fit for one or two people answering, and prices are as of October 2026 for BetterSocials and Meta Business Suite, and September 2026 for ManyChat and InstantDM.
| Tool | Price | DM platforms | Automated replies | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | $29/mo or $24 yearly, 4 accounts | Instagram, Facebook, TikTok | AI replies in your voice | Owners who want DMs answered for them |
| Meta Business Suite | Free | Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp | Templates or Meta Business Agent | Businesses staying inside Meta's apps |
| ManyChat | $39/mo or $29 yearly, 2,500 contacts | Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, WhatsApp, SMS | AI included from Pro | Multi-step flows and broadcasts |
| InstantDM | Free plan, 500 credits a month | Instagram, Facebook | AI agents on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini | Trying automation at no cost |
| respond.io | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed | Several staff sharing one inbox |
Meta Business Suite and InstantDM's free plan are cheaper than everything else here. What BetterSocials adds for $29 a month is AI replies drafted from your own past replies and unlimited contacts, where InstantDM's AI agents run on ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini rather than your voice.
ManyChat bills by active contacts, meaning each person who interacts with your account in a month. ManyChat changed its plans for accounts created on or after March 2, 2026, and its free plan dropped from 1,000 contacts to 25. Past the limit, Pro charges $0.05 for each extra contact on monthly billing. A Pro account that reaches 4,000 people in a month pays $39 + 1,500 x $0.05 = $114.

When respond.io earns its price
respond.io is the right pick when several people share the inbox and the business runs messaging as a support or sales operation. At that size, software built for a team is what you're paying for, and it gets used.
Pick Meta Business Suite if you answer the DMs yourself, live inside Meta's apps and your questions fit a few fixed templates. Pick BetterSocials if you answer the DMs yourself or with one helper and want the routine replies written and sent in your voice. Pick ManyChat if your business runs on multi-step flows or WhatsApp and SMS broadcasts.
What BetterSocials does with the same DMs
BetterSocials puts Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs in one inbox with your comments, and its AI replies can answer the DMs for you. The DMs section has three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice.
On Draft for me, every new DM gets a draft in your voice and nothing sends until you approve it. On Reply in my voice, a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, which only switches on after you've written at least one AI rule, a plain sentence such as your prices, hours or booking link. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, the DM waits for you, and after five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you too.
Keyword comment-to-DM works on Instagram and Facebook with no flow builder: a word in a comment sends that person a DM with your link. Every plan has unlimited contacts and unlimited keyword automations, and each AI reply uses one AI credit.
Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts, one login and 1,000 AI credits a month. If you do grow into a team, Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for 12 accounts and unlimited teammates. BetterSocials doesn't connect WhatsApp, so a business that sells over WhatsApp keeps Meta's inbox for that. BetterSocials' pricing page lists a 7-day free trial on every plan, card required.
